How to Print Your Invitation at Home: Paper Weight, DPI and Printer Settings

Quick Summary

To print your invitations cleanly at home, download the 300 DPI vector PDF, load 110–130 lb (300 gsm) matte cardstock, and set your print dialog scale to 'Actual Size' or 100% with high-quality photo settings.

The Quick Answer

Printing professional-grade invitations at home requires three elements: a vector PDF export calibrated to 300 DPI, premium cardstock between 100 lb and 130 lb (270–350 gsm), and ensuring your printer dialog is set to 100% Actual Size rather than Fit to Printable Area.

1. Choose the Right Paper Stock

Standard office paper (20 lb / 75 gsm) will feel flimsy and cause ink bleed. For invitation cards, we strongly recommend:

  • Heavy Cardstock (100–120 lb / 270–300 gsm): The sweet spot for standard home inkjet and laser printers that feed smoothly through the rear paper tray.
  • Cotton or Linen Texture: Uncoated, matte cotton paper produces rich watercolor tones without reflective glare.
  • Color Tone: Natural soft white or warm cream complements gold accents and botanical greenery better than stark cool-blue printer white.

2. Calibrate Your Printer Dialog Settings

Before printing an entire batch, always print a single proof copy to check colors and margins. In your print dialog:

  • Scale: Select 100% or Actual Size. Never use Scale to Fit, which shrinks your card by 3–5% to leave artificial printer borders.
  • Quality: Select High Quality, Best, or Photo Paper Matte to ensure crisp micro-typography.
  • Paper Source: Use your printer's rear manual feed slot to avoid curling thick cardstock through rollers.

3. Exact Dimensions & Trimming

Standard invitation cards export at exactly 5 × 7 inches (1500 × 2100 px @ 300 DPI). If you are printing two cards per 8.5 × 11 inch or A4 cardstock sheet, use a rotary paper trimmer or metal craft ruler with an X-Acto blade along the trim lines rather than scissors for clean, crisp edges.

4. Printing at Local Print Shops

If your home printer struggles with heavy 130 lb paper, upload your exported PDF directly to local or online print providers such as Staples, Office Depot, FedEx Office, or local neighborhood commercial printers. Ask for 110 lb Classic Matte Cover.
